From tears to triumph, let’s discuss one of my most challenging hair transformations yet!
It was another busy day at Miss Bliss, I had just finished with a previous client when I had a beautiful, sweet girl walk in for her hair appointment. She was a new client and before I could even sit her down, her first words were, “I’m terrified for someone to touch my hair!” Not the most comforting words to hear from a fresh face but I was instantly intrigued.
As Sarah began to explain the disaster that transpired to her once gorgeous blonde hair; the damage and breakage was all I could see. As tears ran down her cheek, I couldn’t believe that someone destroyed her hair so badly that it was now at the point of no return. I thought to myself, okay I have two realistic options here. I could just put it in the too-hard basket and not take on the responsibility (I know many would have) or, I could use my extensive knowledge of restoring damaged hair and take the time to help this woman get her confidence back and love her hair once again. I knew what I had to do, what I wanted to do… option two it was!
First things first, we got deep and I mean real deep! I needed to understand the ins and outs of what exactly happened to Sarah’s hair and I mean everything. What colours were used, what home haircare she was applying, how often she got it coloured, did she have a fairy cut with every service? The list goes on however, the effort was a vital step in discovering what happened to her hair and why it ended up this way!

After we conversed for a good half hour, it was time to take a look! The moment I touched Sarah’s fragile hair, it instantly broke and fell all over her shoulders. Disclaimer: no one’s hair should ever do this!
Although Sarah’s desire was to be a vibrant blonde once again, I knew there was no way her hair could take any more bleach or colour. I’m not saying I turned her brown, definitely not (I think she would have hated that even more!) but some deep care had to be taken first. At this point, Sarah’s hair was completely broken and so was she.
We created an in-depth plan for Sarah’s hair journey and got to work! These are my top three steps on fixing damaged, over-processed hair.
Tip 1: Prep for colour
Start with fairy trims and hydration treatments.
I recommend not colouring your hair for 3 -4 months and focusing on regular hydration hair treatments and fairy trims. Doing this will strengthen your hair and slowly remove all the split ends.
Hydration is your new best friend! Using a hydration hair treatment will work deep into the hair’s cuticle, as frequent colour/bleach strips away your natural oils and hydration.
Just so you can understand what type of hair Sarah has – it’s very thick, very curly, and she wants to be a blonde. Sarah was using the Journey hydration treatment 2-3 times a week at home, and every time she was in the salon.

Tip 2 Set up her curated experience.
Find the perfect hairdresser and stick with them. It would help if you kept working with the same hairdresser, as swapping stylists can cause overlapping, different colour brands and different levels of experience—That’s why Sarah was in this situation. It only takes that one time to overlap bleach for your hair to break and cause irreversible damage!
Did you know: That bleach doesn’t stop processing when on your hair—That’s why it is better to leave it up to the professionals.
We started Sarah on a 12-month program. After the prepping stage, I slowly began to introduce foils back into her hair, making sure we were only sticking to her new regrowth.
Tip 3: Its a journey, not a sprint
When bringing your hair back to life, it’s about time, it’s about love and it’s about consistency.
Time: As frustrating as this process is, you have to be patient and let your hair recover and grow.
Love: Give your hair the kindness and love it deserves by applying hydration hair treatments at home, eating healthy, nourishing foods, and being patient with yourself and your hairdresser.
Consistency: Never give up on doing your fairy trims and treatments. “Small daily improvements are the key to staggering long term results” One of my favorite quotes!
After Sarah’s 12-month program, her hair has grown and completely transformed! She has achieved her goal blonde and her hair is not only beautiful but healthy and luscious too! Trust the process and trust in the products you are using. Nothing is a quick fix or repairs your hair in 10 minutes. Don’t forget, it takes time for products to work their magic!
