A hairdresser’s guide to repairing damaged, dry hair

Our hair can have such a huge impact on our self-esteem. Our locks are part of who we are—and for many, it’s a key way we express ourselves.

So, when our hair doesn’t look its best, our confidence can take a massive hit. Especially when our locks are one of the first things people notice about us.

But how do you repair damaged hair? How do you restore moisture to your dry, lifeless strands?

It can be an agonising endeavour. There are so many products on the market—so many tips and tricks online. It can be confusing and frustrating.

You might be wondering: What on Earth do I do?

Well, I’m here to help.

Introducing Yen Body

My Name is Kristy Jaric, and I’m the founder of Yen Body. I’m a former hairdresser who’s been in the industry for over 20 years.

It broke my heart to see so many people trying (and often failing) to repair their damaged hair.

Because it’s so much more than just hair. That’s why I created Yen Body: my own line of quality haircare products.

I wanted to help people get the hair of their dreams. No more lifeless, dead, dry, damaged hair: life is too short to be stuck with locks you don’t love!

And I want you to love your hair

It won’t happen overnight.

Like all good things, repairing your hair takes time. But with the right products, the right steps, and the right support, you can bring your hair back to life.

Ready for healthier, stronger, shinier hair? Here’s the 5 steps you need to start your journey.

Step 1: assess your hair.

To repair your hair, first you need to assess its health. You can do this alone with a mirror, or ask a friend to help.

Take note of the areas where breakage is occurring. This is usually around your crown and front hairline.

You’ll also want to look at the texture of your hair. Does it feel like straw? Does it crumble in your hands? Take note of the areas where this is happening—typically, it’s the mid-length and ends of your hair.

Why do you care – you ask? If your hair is feeling like this or is starting to feel like straw or unmanageable. I’m telling you now things are only going to get worse! Your hair will continue to break and eventually all snap off and you will be left with short uneven hair. I don’t want to scare you but I want to save your hair before it gets to this point.

Step 2: use quality PH-balancing shampoo and conditioner.

Quality shampoo and conditioner can make a huge difference to your hair’s health—particularly a PH-balancing range, like our Cortex Protection Shampoo and Conditioner.

Using this range will balance the PH levels in your hair and scalp. This helps strengthen the strands and cortex of your hair, while cleansing the scalp to promote good hair growth. It also helps to rebuild your hair cuticles.

Many people aren’t aware of the impacts PH-balancing hair products can have, but they’re vital. Every day, physical and environmental factors affect the PH levels of your hair and scalp—so it’s important to use proper products to give your hair the best chance to repair itself.

Plus, with prickly pear and biotin, our Cortex Protection range packs a punch of much-needed moisture.

Tip: Wash your hair only once or twice a week. Too much washing will strip the natural oils from your hair.

Step 3: treat and hydrate your locks.

It’s not enough to just wash your hair in quality products. Sometimes, damaged hair needs an extra hit of moisture—like our overnight Journey Hydration Treatment.

Journey is filled with hand-picked ingredients (like aloe vera, shea butter and vitamin A, C and E) designed to hydrate your hair and nourish your strands from the inside out. With all-natural ingredients, Journey won’t irritate your scalp or skin. Plus, it’s scented with lavender and camomile: perfect as you drift off to a relaxing night’s sleep while Journey does all the hard work.

Give your hair a little bit of extra hydration 2 – 3 times a week. The more hydration and love you give your hair, the better it will be!

Tip: apply Journey to dry hair so you don’t dilute the product.

Step 4: protect your strands.

Leave-in products are a great way to add a little extra moisture, no matter what kind of hair day you’re having. Like When using your heat tools they can act as a heat protectant, even when you are out in the wind or sun this affects your hair and also the PH levels in your hair which can cause breakage that you didn’t even know was happening.

Our Last Defence moisturiser is specially formulated for long-lasting hydration. Infused with botanicals, vitamin B and prickly pear, this PH-balancing product will protect your hair from the elements all day long.

Apply Last Defence to the middle and ends of your strands after towel drying.

Tip: don’t use heat tools while your hair is damaged. I know! It’s hard—but trust me, it will make a huge difference your hair’s health.

Step 5: get a trim.

I know getting a hair cut from a hairdresser can be a traumatising experience—especially when so many hairdressers are scissor happy and would rather cut all your hair off.

As someone that’s experienced damaged hair, I think chopping it all off can actually make us feel worse.

That’s why I recommend “fairy trims”. This is where you only trim your split ends, which stops it from snapping further up the hair shaft.

Find a good hairdresser you trust, and get trims every 4 – 6 weeks. Getting an in-salon treatment can also help.

It’s a good idea to stop colouring or bleaching your hair, even for a few months. It will make a huge difference, and allow your hair to recover faster.

Tip: stick with one hairdresser throughout this process. It will make it easier for them to work with you to repair your hair.
